LZ Lima Zulu

Located at ZB 095-345 in Kontum province, II Corps. This was the forward location of B Battery 2nd Battalion 320th Artillery (towed 105mm howitzer). The hastily constructed fire support base was needed since the Dak Ta Kan region was beyond the range of artillery located at Dak To. This LZ was secured by only one platoon of Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion 502nd Infantry (Airborne) of the 101st Airborne Division. Bravo Battery 1st Battalion 30th Artillery (towed 155mm howitzers) moved to a position approximately 500 meters west of LZ Lima Zulu and set up a firing base since their prime movers were unable to ford the Dak Djram because the bridge at ZB 086-345 had been rendered impassable. Alpha Company 326th Engineer Battlion was also located here after having constructed the firing positions for the howitzers.

At 0200 on June 7th, 1966, LZ Lima Zulu was subjected to a human wave attack by the NVA after a heavy mortar barrage. The security platoon manning the perimeter was no match for the battalion-size NVA force that attacked and the enemy breached the perimeter and actually overran the number 6 gun of the 320th Artillery but the Redlegs responded by firing beehive rounds over open sights at the enemy breaking the attack and allowing the artillerymen to retake gun number 6. Supporting fires from Bravo Battery 1st Battalion 30th Artillery (relocated to just north of the Dak To airstrip) pounded the NVA and caused them heavy casualties. The combined efforts of all elements repulsed the attack and the LZ remained in U.S. hands.

Location data was graciously provided by George Mercado, who served with the 2nd Battalion 502nd Infantry (Airborne) of the 101st Airborne Division during this period. George has a theory that the rather odd name of this LZ (LZ Lima Zulu translated would mean "Landing Zone LZ" which is obviously redundant) stemmed from the fact that it was established in such a hurry that no one had time to come up with a flashier name. Makes perfect sense to me.
