Located at YA 880-000 (center of mass) in Pleiku province, II Corps. This granite monolith stretched westward into Cambodia and aloowed the NVA to move freely along its ridgelines into protected areas when pressure became too great on NVA units in South Vietnam. The highest peak in the range was Chu Pong Mountain which rose to a height of 732 meters above sea level. The massif rose abruptly from the surrounding plateau and was visible for many miles. Covered with double and triple-canopy rainforest it offered thousands of potential hiding places for the NVA. The eastern and northern sections were the target of heavy B-52 bombing after the 1st Cavalry Division left the area following the Ia Drang battles. Chu Pong Massif
